Types of Web search tools:

What are directories?  

  • Human-selected websites organized into categories (classification)
  • Consider these characteristics: size, categories, annotations, searchability, authority (origin), features)
  • General diretories - cover vipl.org , open directory http://www.dmoz.org/ 
  • Specialized subject directories
    Example: healthfinder.gov and many more listed on the textbook website http://www.extremesearcher.com/handbooklinks.html#chap2
    • Directories are most useful for general questions (e.g. speech class need to select a topic)  or when you want to find selected information on a topic. 

 

What are search engines

  • Large database of websites; results include your keyword(s); ranked by the search to

–      How do they work?  p.  62

- crawler finds webpages on the open web,

- web pages are indexed (http://www.google.com/librariancenter/articles/0512_01.html)

- results of a searh are ranked for the results list:

          - Ranking: example: Google page ranking  http://www.google.com/corporate/tech.html 
                                                    spoof: http://www.google.com/technology/pigeonrank.html

- Display of results - can include advertisements,sponsored links, related searches, other links

  

Metasearch: searches other search tools together.  
      (example Dogpile.com  – show comparison – it searches google. Yahoo, bing – not same results

Portal: a gateway to web resources; can include search, directory and additional links (e.g. MyYahoo; iGoogle)

               

Search strategies: Basic list of strategies: pages 13-14

–      BRAINSTORMING Keywords:

  • use quotation marks for phrases; 
  • add more words to narrow; 
  • use synonyms to broaden or find more

 

–      Advanced search options: 

        consider which might be useful for a particular type of search or type of information needed.  

  • What are filters?  
    • Types of filters (by: title, domain type, inURL, file type, date)

–      Boolean operators p 67-8
